# Length

## Description

This operation returns the number of Unicode characters in your input strings, that is to say, the number of visible characters they have. This includes multi-byte characters like emojis and accented characters.

***

## Data types

These are the input/output expected data types for this operation:

### Input data

`String` - Strings to be measured.

### Output data

`Integer` - Number of Unicode characters in the input strings.

***

## Example

Suppose you want to calculate the **length** of a series of strings. To do it:

1. In your Pipeline, open the required [Action](/pipelines/actions.md) configuration and select the input **Field**.
2. In the **Operation** field, choose **Length**.
3. Give your **Output field** a name and click **Save**. You'll get the count of Unicode characters in each of your strings. For example:

```
hello world! -> 12
```

{% hint style="info" %}
You can try out operations with specific values using the **Input** field above the operation. You can enter the value in the example above and check the result in the **Output** field.
{% endhint %}
