# Trim string

## Description

This operation removes unwanted characters from the beginning and end of a string. By default, it removes whitespace characters (such as spaces), but you can specify any characters to trim.

This operation is useful for cleaning up text by removing leading and trailing characters like spaces, punctuation, or custom symbols.

## Parameters

These are the parameters you need to configure to use this operation (mandatory parameters are marked with a <mark style="color:red;">**\***</mark>):

Enter a string containing the characters to remove from both ends of the input strings. If not provided, the operation trims only spaces by default.

## Example

Suppose you want to **trim** your input strings by removing a series of characters **from their beginning and end**:

1. In your Pipeline, open the required [Action](https://docs.onum.com/the-workspace/pipelines/actions) configuration and select the input **Field**.
2. In the **Operation** field, choose **Trim string**.
3. Set **Characters to trim** to `!` . This will remove all blank spaces and exclamation marks.
4. Give your **Output field** a name and click **Save**. The input strings will be trimmed, removing all blank spaces and exclamation marks from both sides.

For example:
